The ticker people will type

Table of Contents

Coinbase search results for XBT: OKX Wrapped BTC (XBTC), then two Solana tokens both named XBT, $124.1K and $309.7K market cap. No BLAKE2b coin.

What Coinbase returns for XBT, September 8, 2026.

A ticker is not a name. It is the string a person types into a search box, and its one job is to bring back the right thing. Judge a ticker by that test and nothing else.

What happened this week

On September 5 a small exchange listed the BLAKE2b coin as BTCB2. The chain’s supporters did not like the label. The case for XBT was that it already means bitcoin. ISO 4217 gives a national currency its country code plus a letter, USD, JPY, and gives what no country issues an X: XAU for gold, XAG for silver, XPT for platinum. Bitcoin is a commodity, not a country, so XBT is the form that fits, and exchanges and Bloomberg have used it for bitcoin for over a decade. On September 7 at 22:54 UTC a second exchange relabeled its pairs from BTCB2 to XBT “as requested” by the team, and on September 8 a third listed the coin as XBT from the start. The first exchange still said BTCB2 this evening. So the same coin trades under two tickers, and the people who picked one of them say the community rejected the other.

What the test returns

We typed XBT into Coinbase on September 8. The BLAKE2b coin is not there, and as far as we can find no large exchange lists it. The search returned three things: a wrapped bitcoin token whose ticker is XBTC, and two Solana tokens both named XBT, with market caps of $124,100 and $309,700. Both are memecoins. Neither has anything to do with this chain.

The ticker chosen because it already means bitcoin already belongs, on the app a newcomer is most likely to open, to two tokens minted because it means bitcoin. On X the same evening one trader said the “original” XBT memecoin “did 30 million on pump.fun”; another said the one being sold to him was made less than a day ago. They were arguing over which memecoin was the real one.

Then the bots arrived. Through the morning of September 8 and until about 16:00 UTC, accounts with a handful of followers each posted the same template: “New listing spotted: $XBT. @solana chain. Vote now and support the listing,” followed by a random code and a link. The X API counted 633 of them by 17:00 UTC and none on any earlier day that week. Whoever picks a ticker also picks its neighbors, and these were already moving in.

What we do

We had used no ticker here. Since September 9 we use XBT: it follows the convention, it has a decade of history with bitcoin, and two of the three exchanges already use it. We will reconsider if something changes. The label a reader needs is still whichever one the exchange in front of them uses.

The result will change. Exchanges list, memecoins die, and a search from September 8 carries its date for that reason. Repeat it and get something different, and the date has done its job.
